Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to register my scooter with the DMV?

Most of the time, you do not have to register your small electric scooter or motor scooter with the DMV. This is because most scooters are not street legal, and so they do not have to be registered. In order to be street legal, a scooter must have certain safety features, like a horn, turn signal, and lights. Some of the larger, gas-powered motor scooters are street legal because they meet certain speed and safety requirements. Ultimately, the short answer is if they have a VIN, they must be registered with the DMV. If they do not, they are recreational vehicles only and must be kept off the road. However, if they are recreational vehicles and must be kept off road, they can’t be used on sidewalks or bikepaths, either. This is because they are technically motorized vehicles, and so travel at higher speeds than cyclists and pedestrians. You can be cited and fined for taking your motor scooter onto sidewalks.

Is it against the law to ride my scooter without a helmet?

That depends on local laws. For example, if you are riding a street legal scooter in California, you need to wear a helmet. Fines for breaking helmet laws can be very stiff, and so if you are unsure about the legality of it, contact your local DMV or law enforcement. Even if it is not required by the state to use a helmet with a scooter, keep in mind that you are extremely vulnerable on motor scooters, especially at high speeds.

Can I ride my scooter on the freeway?

If the scooter is street legal. If a scooter can travel above sixty-five miles per hour and has all the required safety features, and you are registered with the DMV and carry the proper license, you can travel on the freeway. Generally, the engine size should be 200cc, or 150cc at the least.  In order to be registered with the DMV, your scooter must have a VIN. A little push scooter with a tiny electric engine will not be suitable for highway driving, however, a larger gas powered scooter, like a Vespa or a Honda, will be street legal, like most motorcycles. This is great news for anybody who is seeking out a motor scooter in order to save money on fuel.
